Jim is an attorney and owner at Howard Stallings From,  Atkins, Angell & Davis P.A. Jim represents clients in general business matters and business transactions with a particular emphasis on Bankruptcy Law. His background as a business lawyer and Certified Public Accountant provide him with the skills to address complicated business issues. His experience as a commercial litigator gives him the perspective to counsel clients on minimizing their exposure to lawsuits and the ability to bring or defend them if necessary. Jim brings a practical and calculated result-oriented approach to his practice to obtain results for his clients as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Jim concentrates his practice in assisting clients with complex business issues, debtor/creditor issues, and representation in state court and bankruptcy court. During his career, Jim has appeared in both state and federal courts. He is an experienced bankruptcy lawyer as has appeared in over 3,500 bankruptcy cases, including over 375 adversary proceedings (lawsuits filed in bankruptcy cases), 40 discharge actions, 150 preference actions and over 70 fraudulent transfer actions.

Jim is a Business Bankruptcy Specialist, certified by the North Carolina State Board of Legal Specialization and by the American Board of Certification and is a panel Chapter 7 Trustee for the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina. Jim has over twenty-five years of extensive experience in representing creditors and debtors in out-of-court workouts and Chapter 7 (Liquidation) and Chapter 11 (reorganization) bankruptcies.  He has appeared in business Chapter 11 cases involving such diverse industries as real estate development, construction, manufacturing and production, retail sales, restaurants, and service industries. He is also experienced in representing individuals in Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 cases involving complicated tax issues and domestic issues. His background in accounting and tax allows him to review and understand complex business problems beyond the scope of the untrained lawyer.

Education and Memberships

Jim earned his J.D. from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985 and his B.A. in 1979. He was admitted to the bar in 1985. The North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission certified him to conduct mediations in North Carolina Superior Court in 2007. Jim served on the North Carolina State Bar board of specialization until 2015 and remains active with the specialization program. Jim has been a member of the North Carolina Bar Association CLE Committee since 2004. Jim has also served as a chairman of several committees of the North Carolina Bar Association Bankruptcy Section. He is also a member of the Chapter 7 trustee panel in the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina and serves regularly as a Chapter 7 trustee. Having the experience of representing debtors, creditors, and serving as a Chapter 7 and chapter 11 trustees provides him a unique advantage in representing clients in bankruptcy.
