RECRUITING

General Information:

Howard Stallings is an equal-opportunity employer. We seek self-motivated individuals who want to experience the challenge of a sophisticated legal practice in a firm that also values the quality of life of its employees.

Hiring decisions for associates and summer clerks are made by the partners of the firm based upon recommendations from the recruiting committee. You may contact the chair of the recruiting committee, Brian E. Moore, for more information.

The firm hires paralegals, office assistants, receptionists, and other support staff on an as-needed basis. If you are interested in applying for an opening with our firm, you may contact our office for more information.

Associates:

Associates can expect that early in their career they will have significant client contact and case management responsibility. This additional responsibility is balanced with readily available supervision and guidance from the firm’s principals. The “open door” policy of our senior attorneys provides a valuable training ground and mentoring experience for our new associates.

The annual minimum billable goal that our associates are expected to achieve is far less than the billable goals of many of the local “mega firms.” The reasonable minimum billing expectation is combined with a recognition and tangible appreciation of our associates’ efforts. Our firm supplements our associates’ competitive base salaries with significant bonuses for billable hours in excess of the minimum billable goal.

Summer Clerks:

Our firm has traditionally hired at least one summer clerk each year to work on a variety of matters during the summer following the second year of law school. Our summer program is for the full summer. We allow our summer clerks to work on projects of real importance, and we incorporate our summer clerks into the work of the law firm with as much responsibility as their skills and experience will allow.

A summer clerk can expect to work directly with a number of different attorneys in a wide range of practice areas. The high level of involvement with the work of the firm is combined with support and supervision from both the associates and the partners of the firm. Because our program encourages collaboration with people within several different practice areas, it provides both a valuable learning experience and an opportunity for summer clerks to fully assess their compatibility with the work and their colleagues as they consider their options for future full-time employment with our firm.

Support Staff:

Our firm operates through teams of paralegals, attorneys and office assistants. Each paralegal works in conjunction with one or two attorneys to meet our clients’ needs. In turn, office assistants work with our paralegals to perform non-billable, clerical tasks, and run errands outside of the office. This team approach is designed to provide our clients with efficient services, while allowing our staff to work together to maximize each person’s potential.
